Big Bowls for the Holidays!

Make something worth gathering around.

Holiday dinners deserve beautiful bowls! In this festive three-session workshop, you'll create generous serving bowls, dramatic centerpieces, and other beautiful forms to bring to your holiday table.

We'll explore techniques for throwing wide, stable bowls, whether you're ready to tackle 8 pounds of clay or prefer to start with a more manageable 2 pounds. Make as many bowls as you like, experiment with different shapes and sizes, and develop your skills along the way.

And then comes the really fun part: festive glazing! We'll explore decorative glaze combinations and special effects, including a demonstration of the frozen pond technique, to create rich, wintry surfaces and showstopping finishes. Each bowl is a new opportunity to experiment.

What to Expect

Over three sessions, we'll take your bowls from start to finish:

  • Session 1 — Throwing: Explore wide, stable forms and experiment with different bowl shapes and sizes.

  • Session 2 — Trimming: Refine your bowls, create beautiful feet, and prepare your pieces for firing.

  • Session 3 — Festive Glazing: Learn the frozen pond technique and experiment with layered glazes and decorative effects to make each bowl shine. Choose from our shared Glaze Lab sessions once your pieces are ready!

Who's This Class For?

This workshop is perfect for advanced beginners and intermediate potters who want to expand their throwing skills and get creative with glazing. You should already feel comfortable centering clay and throwing a small cylinder, but you don't need any experience throwing large amounts of clay.

Whether you're dreaming of an oversized salad bowl, a centerpiece for your holiday table, or a collection of smaller serving dishes, there's plenty of room to make this class your own.
